UV-5R 5W Dual Band Radio
Introduced in 2012, the Baofeng UV-5R Dual Band Radio quickly became a favorite among radio enthusiasts. Known for its dual-band and dual-display capabilities, the UV-5R has undergone significant upgrades since its launch. The second-generation model, marked by the BFB297 Firmware (2nd Gen.), debuted in early 2013, followed by the N5R firmware tweak in August 2014.
While the UV-5R comes in various cosmetic designs—such as the UV-5R v2+, UV-5RA, UV-5RE, and UV-5R+ (Plus)—these variants are largely cosmetic with minimal functional differences. Notably, the ‘Band Key’ was removed in the second generation.
In late 2013, the UV-5R expanded to include the inverted (privacy) display series, including the BF-F8+ and its variants like the GT-3 and 997-S. The evolution continued with the introduction of the 3rd Generation BF-F8HP in the fall of 2014, marking the UV-5R’s transition to its next phase of advanced features.
